Big thanks goes to all attendees of the March 17, 2014 "Innovations in Geriatric Nursing Excellence" Conference. All the proceeds from participant registration, additional donations and generous donations from Kaiser and Ace Hardware helped to raise more than $17,000 for the Hartford Center’s Jeanie Schmit Kayser-Jones Student Scholarship Fund.

Over 30 students, faculty, and alumni came together in the Lange room on Nov. 13, 2013 for an informal evening of networking, food and engaging panel discussion with UCSF School of Nursing masters and doctoral students as well as recently graduated faculty. The event was open to all masters and MEPN, doctoral candidates and post doc Nursing students and faculty with an interest in gerontological nursing.

The UCSF John A. Hartford Center for Gerontological Excellence has a great tradition of mentoring students and faculty to become leaders in the field of geriatrics and gerontology. Through the generosity of the Hartford Foundation and our donors, the Center is able to recruit an exceptional cadre of nurse scientists who provide the critically necessary academic leadership in teaching, research, and practice in geriatric nursing.

Shirley Sears Chater, PhD, RN, FAAN

Former UCSF Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, has been selected as the recipient of the 2013 Nurse.com Diane F. Cooper Lifetime Achievement Award.  She will be honored at the Nurse.com Giving Excellence Meaning (GEM) Awards program on August 23, in Los Angeles. The Lifetime Achievement Award is sponsored by Cedars-Sinai.

Current Assistant Adjunct Professor, Department of Physiological Nursing and recent UCSF graduate and John A. Hartford Predoctoral Scholar, has accepted a tenure track faculty position in the Department of Nursing and Health Sciences at Cal State University East Bay starting in September 2013.

Alumnus Jason Overby, MS, RN, GNP-BC, has been hard at work since crossing the stage at UCSF School of Nursing MS Program graduation June 2012.  He has joined the growing cadre of advanced practice nurses at the Mills-Peninsula Medical Center in Burlingame.  Jason was hired at Mills Peninsula in August 2012 as the medical center’s Geriatric Advanced Practice Nurse, a new role in this agency.

The American Academy of Nursing will induct their 2013 class of fellows during the Academy’s 40th annual meeting on October 19, 2013, in Washington, DC.  Among the 172 leaders inducted this year, 2 of our very own UCSF Hartford Center Associate Directors, Janine Cataldo and Laura Wagner will be given this honor.

The Academy is composed of more than 2,000 nurse leaders in education, management, practice, policy, and research. The Academy Fellows include hospital and government administrators, college deans, and renowned scientific researchers.

On June 5, 2013 The Hartford Center had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Louise Aronson, UCSF Associate Professor in the UCSF Division of Medicine and author of the new, award winning book “History of the Present Illness,” which takes readers into the lives of patients and doctors in the neighborhoods, hospitals and nursing homes of San Francisco.

Heather M. Greysen, a Nursing Doctoral Student in the UCSF Department of Occupational and Environmental Health (OEH) and a current National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) Fellow is completing her second year of the Nursing Doctoral Program.  Her interest is in quality of life in an aging population with arthritis and how yoga and other complimentary mind body therapies can help with symptoms of arthritis.
